What is In the Company of Masters? Back to top
In the Company of Masters is a collaborative website dedicated to the connections between masters of the arts, sciences and other disciplines. The information about masters is mostly borrowed from wikipedia, leaving our users free to focus on the connections between those masters. Connections can be enriched through text, pictures and videos.
Why are connections between masters important? Back to top
Connections between great masters are often underappreciated. Pablo Picasso alone wouldn't have started cubism and neither would have Georges Braque. But together, through a combination of cooperation and competition, the two men managed to pull it off. We try to spot those connections whereever they are, keeping in mind that painters can collaborate with writers, photographers or even scientists.
How do I create a master? Back to top
First you want to make sure that this master's page doesn't already exist by typing his/her name in the searchbox. If it doesn't exist, you can create it easily. Click on "Create a master" in the left menu. You will be asked to provide the first name, last name and main occupation of your candidate, for instance "Steven", "Spielberg" and "Director". The page will be automatically created, based on Wikipedia's content. Potential connections with other masters, which you'll be free to expand, will also be suggested.

Of course you are! Remember: Wikipedia wasn't created in a day. Write a text, even a short one, and other members will then elaborate on it. If you don't feel like writing, you can help by adding pictures and videos to the existing connections.
How do you suggest connections for a particular master? Back to top
We suggest connections based on the master's wikipedia page. If Tom Cruise's page points to Nicole Kidman's and vice versa, these two are probably connected in some way. In some cases however, the link found between the two masters will be circumstancial and will not warrant a connection.Overall these suggested connections are a starting point: they should either be expanded on or deleted.
To be connected, do masters need to have lived at the same time? Back to top
Yes. This was a choice we had to make. Picasso has been influenced by Greco and da Vinci but he didn't have a meaningful connection with them.
What makes for a good connection? Back to top
There are four types of connection: blood (think Sigmund & Lucien Freud), love (Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman), friendship (Stefan Zweig & Romain Rolland) and work (Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal). We're interested in strong, meaningful connections, that go beyond mere circumstances. For instance, the fact that two actors have starred in the same film doesn't make them connected in our eyes, unless they have developed a particular bond on the set.
If I delete a suggested connection, does it mean it will be lost forever? Back to top
No. It simply means that it will no longer be suggested. It is always possible to create a manual connection between two contemporary masters.
Is there a limit to the number of connections a master can have? Back to top
No! If we have hundreds of friends on Facebook, how many do you think that John Wayne or Victor Hugo had?
